 Viktor Yanukovych held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Franc-Walter Steinmeier

Party of Regions Leader Viktor Yanukovych held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Franc-Walter Steinmeier. He informed the Minister about a letter to NATO Secretary General Yaap de Hoop Scheffer regarding the Party of Regions position concerning the NATO Membership Action Plan.

"The Party of Regions Political Council have endorsed an appropriate decision and today I signed and sent the letter to NATO Secretary General", – Viktor Yanukovych stated. He also emphasized the invariability of the position which he expressed in September 2006 during his visit to the NATO headquarters concerning Ukraine's unreadiness to join the NATO Membership Action Plan and necessity to consider the public opinion in solving this issue. "We should work on to correct a mistake committed by signing the "letter of three", – the Party of Regions Leader marked.
Assessing the domestic situation, Viktor Yanukovych stated that Ukraine is passing through a difficult political path. "The political crisis lasts. The fragile majority in the Parliament does not let the Verkhovna Rada and the Government work effectively", – the Party of Regions Leader emphasized.
During the meeting the parties have also discussed issues of bilateral collaboration between Ukraine and Germany. Franc-Walter Steinmeier with pleasure recalled the common signing of an agreement on simplifying the visa regime between Ukraine and the EU last year. The Party of Regions Leader thanked the Minister for supporting Ukraine on its way to the WTO. | |
