Viktor Yanukovych met with the IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine

03.11.2008, 16:28

Viktor Yanukovych responded to IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine Balazs Horvath's initiative and discussed with him the issue concerning the terms of granting a credit to Ukraine.

It is worth mentioning that the IMF Resident Representative was surprised that the members of parliament did not get from the Ukrainian Government the full text of the Agreement on Granting a Credit and that the negotiating process between the Ukrainian Government and the IMF was not transparent.

Balazs Horvath voiced his willingness to inform about the credit terms in every detail and answered the numerous questions set by the Opposition Leader. In particular, the IMF Representative confirmed the data that the interest rate of credit is floating and it can be changed according to the situation. Balazs Horvath briefed Viktor Yanukovych on the main points of the appendices to the Memorandum signed with the Ukrainian Government. He underlined that the Party of Regions' support is crucial for the IMF as the PoR has the largest faction in parliament and is likely to come to power in the future.

Balazs Horvath confirmed the information that among the terms set for Ukraine by the IMF, there is a requirement to increase tariffs for gas of local production for the population's needs, as well as to modify the social protection system.

During the conversation issues concerning the prognosis of inflation rate and the people's income level for the next year were touched upon. The sides discussed the prognosis of high inflation rate.

At the same time, Viktor Yanukovych pointed out that it is not worth acting hastily regarding the IMF credit for Ukraine. Success of this program can be achieved only provided that an effective instrument of control over the use of the credits is found.

"We cannot keep aloof from this process, – said V.Yanukovych, – but we cannot assume the responsibility for actions of the government, which does not have support in parliament, is unprofessional and works exceptionally for the elections."

"We wish Ukraine did not build relations with the IMF in a way when any side doubts, – Viktor Yanukovych marked. – All decisions should be transparent and should be implemented."
