Viktor Yanukovych suggests that Ukraine becomes an initiator of a world leaders' conference who would sign new agreements on guarantees for the state sovereignties

The proclamation of Kosovo independence without Serbia's approval has in fact destroyed the order which was set to ensure the inviolability of the frontiers after the World War II.
The world got a serious precedent on abolishing the Helsinki (1975) agreements which guaranteed the inviolability of state boundaries. It is dangerous both for Europe and for the world as a whole.
We are aware that the large states will complete the process of favouring independence in Kosovo. But it is necessary to take into account that it will aggravate the situation in which Balkans will remain to be the region of instability and uncertainty on the European continent. The processes which are of interest to various countries and unions are taking place there. Balkans may once again turn out to be an arena of geopolitical rivalry in the region.
We also understand that Kosovo case may spur those challenges and risks which Ukraine faces nowadays.
Therefore Ukraine should take a lead over an international conference involving high representatives of all countries of the world. The new order of guarantees for the state sovereignties should be worked out. New agreements to replace the Helsinki ones which were almost destroyed by the Kosovo precedent, should be elaborated. | |
