Viktor Yanukovych considers that election of Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada is an important step toward resumption of Parliament's legislative activity

05.12.2007, 16:44

On behalf of the Government Viktor Yanukovych has congratulated Arseniy Yatsenyuk on his election as Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

"I believe that we should congratulate Arseniy Petrovych on his election – he is a member of our Cabinet, Minister and we wish him success in it," the Prime Minister said, opening a regular sitting of the Cabinet of Ministers.

In the Prime Minister's opinion, election of the Verkhovna Rada's Chairman is the first important step toward resumption of the Parliament's legislative activity which, as a result of the political crisis, has been blocked eight months ago.

"When the Parliament's activity is paralysed and blocked, undoubtedly, the government system as a whole is not able to work efficiently – that is what we have experienced all the time. And I am also confident that both Ukrainian people and our partners all over the world feel the same. That is why it is very important to renew the Parliament's activity as soon as possible," Viktor Yanukovych noted.

At the same time, according to the Prime Minister, deputies' voting of two factions for the Verkhovna Rada's Speaker was humiliating for representatives of these political forces and proved lack of confidence between them toward each other that, in its turn, casts doubt on efficiency of the newly elected parliament coalition.

"Yesterday's voting reflects the real state of affairs in the collation which, to my mind, was called democratic too early. Because that humiliating procedure, passed by 227 people's deputies yesterday – is a casern-like democracy, when some posts check up how the deputies voted. When the Constitution and Regulations of the Verkhovna Rada envisage a secret ballot," Viktor Yanukovych stressed.
