Viktor Yanukovych: We should be concerned about the security and national interests of Ukraine, rather than the other states' interests

The Party of Regions Leader Viktor Yanukovych during a press-conference, answering the journalists' question about the Party of Regions' attitude towards the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, said:
- Today we have held a meeting of the faction council. We examined the items concerning the home policy situation in Ukraine and the recent tragic events in the Northern Caucasus and estimated these issues.
Our country has found itself in a very complicated situation following the policy makers' statements on the occasion of the armed conflict in the territory of Northern Ossetia.
The statements of Ukraine's heads in support of Georgia resulted in the present conflict situation with the Russian state. Definitely, Viktor Yushchenko can be understood as a person who has almost kindred relationship with Mikhail Saakashvili. But as President, Yushchenko did not have a right to express his support of Saakashvili on behalf of the Ukrainian state. In our opinion, if President Yushchenko had wished to interfere in the situation in North Caucasus, he should have done it only as a representative of the third party which would have done everything to avoid this conflict.
I do not imagine the president of Moldova or the president of Azerbaijan who would order to annihilate the people in territories of "frozen" conflicts – either in Transnistria or Nagorno- Karabakh. Why did Saakashvili do it? Why the civilian population was killed, why the cities and villages are destroyed, why there is a huge death toll? Today we put this question to the world community. It should be considered at the level of international organizations, such as the UN Security Council and OSCE. We think that the international community should condemn the Georgian president's actions. Such actions should be denounced, rather than supported.
We see that the subject of European security is very pressing nowadays. We have to think now over the place Ukraine is to assume in the system of this security. In this view, we deem that the guidance of the country and the MFA have made unreasonable statements, which are not good for Ukraine. We should not serve the US interests in confrontation against Russia. We should be concerned of security and national interests of Ukraine, rather than the other states' interests. | |
