Viktor Yanukovych: The Party of Regions will never infringe upon other parties' rights and is not going to gain monopoly on Ukraine's political map

19.09.2008, 09:23

Answering the media representatives' questions during a trip to Lugansk region, the Party of Regions Leader Viktor Yanukovych said that he did not find it reasonable to hold elections to Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in two rounds.

"We discussed this issue within our party. We consider that so far Ukraine is not ready for such a decision", he said in particular.

According to Viktor Yanukovych, the Party of Regions will never infringe upon other parties' rights and is not going to gain monopoly on Ukraine's political map. At the same time, V.Yanukovych agrees that the Party of Regions enjoys an advantage compared to other parties.

"But other parties also have a right to exist and to hear the others. We should not exclude this", he underlined.

Viktor Yanukovych also informed that the Party of Regions faction would propose while making alterations to the Constitution to hold elections to Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in one round. He pointed out that the party-winner should set up the government and should have 226 votes in parliament.

As for the prospects of forming a new coalition in Verkhovna Rada, Viktor Yanukovych mentioned that the Party of Regions faction headed by him created working groups to conduct negotiations concerning a would-be coalition with all parliamentary factions, except for "NU-NS". "Our working groups have already begun to communicate, exchange their views, and this process is under way", Viktor Yanukovych told the journalists, adding thereafter that the decision about establishing such working groups was approved at the Party Presidium meeting.

He also explained why a working group to negotiate with "NU-NS" Block was not created. Particularly, Viktor Yanukovych mentioned: "At the Party Presidium meeting the decision to set up negotiating groups with all parties was made – with the Yulia Tymoshenko Block, with communists and with Litvin. "Our Ukraine – People's Self-Defence" block remained under the question. I think that we stand no chance and, probably, there is no point in beginning these negotiations with "NU-NS".

Also regarding the prospects of further development of the political situation, Viktor Yanukovych said that in his opinion there were no grounds in Ukraine to carry out a so-called force scenario. "I do not believe it. Today there are no preconditions for implementing a force scenario", he noted.

Answering the question about the possibility of reiteration of the Russian-Georgian scenario in Crimea, the Party of Regions Leader said that such statements were nothing else but political technologies in order to make an attempt to exasperate enmity between Ukraine and Russia today.

According to Viktor Yanukovych, there have not been and will never be any frozen conflicts in Crimea. He is also sure that the attempts to embroil Ukraine with Russia will not work.

The Party of Regions Leader marked that political technologies began mushrooming throughout Ukraine following a collapse of the democratic forces' coalition. "As soon as "orange" power broke up, "touring cossacks" became frequent visitors to Ukraine, applying foreign technologies. They want to manipulate the Ukrainian people as it was in 2004", Viktor Yanukovych pointed out.
