Mykhailo Papiev: The government is stealing money from the people

03.07.2008, 16:01

People's Deputy, Party of Regions parliamentary faction member, Minister of Labor and Social Policy of the Opposition government Mykhailo Papiev declared in an interview to DailyUA that the existent living wage in Ukraine lags behind real almost by 100 hryvnias. In particular, he said the following:

- I have tried to obtain explanations from the Yulia Tymoshenko government regarding a living wage already for five months. Now I am preparing a deputy's inquiry addressed to the Prosecutor general. The point is that the Law on a Living Wage from February 12 obligates the government to promulgate an actual volume of living wage until 20th of every month. The government failed to do this in February-June; these alterations to the law being introduced by the President of Ukraine.

For the time being it turns out that the living wage, which is in the budget, is lesser than real nearly by 100 hryvnias. That is, words about the government's achievements, which Tymoshenko constantly pronounces on television is merely a deceit of citizens. Each year the government steals 300-350 hryvnias from the salary of a worker on budget pay-roll and 100-120 hryvnias from pensioners. The government is stealing money from the people.

I hate saying such sharp words. But the government behaves shamefully and defiantly. It just humbles people. You know that only in 2004 we determined that a size of minimum pension must be at the level of living wage for disabled. It appeared that from the new year the government increased a minimum pension only by 11 hryvnias: there were 470 hryvnias and from April 1 there have become 481 hryvnias. From July 1 they promise to add 1 hryvnia and a minimum pension will reach 482 hryvnias. In the light of present price growth rate it is a mockery of pensioners.

Moreover, experts calculated that a real volume of living wage in Ukraine for disabled in May of 2008 made up 578 hryvnias. Actually, the government cut a real volume of living wage by 98 hryvnias. It is jeering at people! Therefore, we have to open people's eyes and explain how cynically and rudely they are deceived by the present authorities.
