Yuriy Boyko: The flood damage could have been less if the Tymoshenko government had approved a development program for small hydroelectric plants
30.07.2008, 17:12
"Just a year ago our government (of Viktor Yanukovych – Ed.) elaborated a state special- purpose program to support the development of small hydroelectric plants. The program involved flood-control measures, i.e. construction of weirs, dikes and reservoirs. It largely enabled settlements, lands and agricultural holdings to be protected against floods, the entirety containing thousands of hectares", People's Deputy, the Party of Regions parliamentary faction member, Minister of Fuel and Energy of the Opposition government Yuriy Boyko said.
The Party of Regions specified that the program was drafted, but it was not considered by the Tymoshenko government. "The Tymoshenko government instead of disparaging its predecessors and rejecting their elaborations could have found a kernel of sense in them for the country's benefit", Yuriy Boyko mentioned.
"At the moment the vast budget funds are being appropriated for restoring damages caused by the natural disaster. Definitely, the people require prompt and efficient aid, and the Party of Regions is actively rendering financial assistance to the victims as well", the People's Deputy said and afterwards underlined that, for example, the program, which had been elaborated by Ukrhydroenergo and Ukrhydroproekt, envisaged the construction of detention reservoirs attached to the series of hydroelectric plants, which enabled depending on the type of a flood to diminish an estimated flood level and reduce the maximal water limit to 1.4 m.
